Yuemei Tourism Sugar Factory

  • Category: Houli Districts/historic buildings
  • Address: No. 350, Sec. 2, Jiahou Rd., Houli Dist., Taichung City 421217, Taiwan (R.O.C.)

Located in Houli District, Taichung City, Yuemei Tourism Sugar Factory was founded in 1909 by a Japanese man named Komatsu Kusuya and named “Dajia Sugar Factory”, and it was a subsidiary of Dai-Nihon Sugar Corporation. After Taiwan’s retrocession, Taiwan Sugar Corporation’s Yuemei Sugar Factory took over production. In 1999, operation ceased due to the changing environment and it transformed into a tourism sugar factory.
Although Yuemei Tourism Sugar Factory has ceased to produce sugar, its huge machineries, distinctive architecture, and the tunnel under the chimney (the only one in Taiwan) still attract many visitors. In addition to the historical monuments, the large warehouse constructed of cypress beams without any pillars has been converted into a sales area to revitalize the space, selling not only Taiwan Sugar products but also snacks and specialties from all over the country. The park also has a petting zoo area and a koi pond with a water path, providing a fun location for parents to take their children. There are also century-old black pine trees, gingko trees, camphor trees, and an exhibition of agricultural tools from the olden days.
