Zhushi Yuanman Park

  • Category: North Districts/Park and Greenway
  • Address: Dongguang 5th Street, North District, Taichung City

Zhushi Yuanman Park was formerly a meat market that operated from 1980 until auction activities ceased in 2021. In the past, the slaughter and auction of live pigs generated unpleasant odors during transportation, and issues such as noise and wastewater discharge caused public complaints. To address the long-standing concerns of residents, the city government coordinated efforts across various departments to transform the meat market. Of the total area, 2 hectares were designated for parkland, while the remaining 3 hectares were allocated for social housing and a mixed-use commercial complex.

The design concept draws inspiration from a "Colorful Carnival," creating a lively and joyful atmosphere throughout the park. Existing trees from the original meat market site were preserved to create an ecologically sustainable space. The overall planning and design centers on four key themes: "transformation and regeneration of the slaughterhouse, preservation of industrial heritage, carnival garden of colors, and sustainable green environment." This provides a fresh landscape experience, transforming what was once an urban "NIMBY" (Not In My Backyard) space plagued by foul odors into an inclusive "PIMBY" (Please In My Backyard) park that brings the community together.
